Oil pipeline vandalism has posed as a serious challenge for a while now in the country and measures have continually been put in place to ensure that it is tackled. The good news is that success is being recorded.Some security agencies protecting some oil installations apprehended Mr. Shuaibu Ogunmola, who is notorious for oil pipeline vandalism in Lagos. Mr. Shuaibu Ogunmola was apprehended at a hotel in Ilashe community, along the Badagry Creek. This was done by officers and men of Operation Awatse, which is a Joint Military Task Force on oil theft and pipeline vandalism ran by the Western Naval Command, Apapa, Lagos.

The head of NNPC Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu, explained that this success was recorded after a lot of dedication and commitment by the NNPC management and security agencies who worked round the clock to ensure that a stop was put to this unlawful act. He went further to add that the acts of this Mr. Shuaibu Ogunmola has over time led to loss of millions of litres of petrol and petroleum products particularly along the Lagos Atlas Cove strip in the strategic System 2B pipeline network.
Mr. Shuaibu Ogunmola before he was apprehended ran a notorious ring for oil theft for years. His gang vandalised pipelines in most island communities in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State along the System 2B network right- of- way. They accomplished this by digging holes metres away from the corporation’s products pipeline. These holes, made into drums collate petrol and petroleum products from vandalised parts of the pipe and double as storage drums. The contents of the drum are later put into other containers and transported. They are later sold to their customers on the beach side or smuggled to Cotonou and sold there.

Rear Admiral Obed Ngalabak, Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, who is also the Commander of Operation Awatse, noted that this was just the beginning and that there are more plans and measures in place to ensure that an end is put to oil pipeline vandalism in the zone. He future added that Mr. Shuaibu Ogunmola was a very notorious oil thief in Ilashe and it’s environs with his network extending to other places. He had other criminals under his wing who engaged in oil pipeline vandalism and brought back his shares to him.
His apprehension is like killing two birds actually three with one stone because his activities has come to a halt, other members of his gang will also be apprehended and other ring leaders will be deterred from continuing in the act. All the security agencies that contributed in one way or the other to the arrest of Mr. Shuaibu Ogunmola have been congratulated and duly admonished to not relent but continue the good work in the same spirit till oil pipeline vandalism is brought to an absolute end.
